Overview

The BC Achievement scholarship recognizes the 8,000 graduates in British Columbia with the highest academic achievement based on courses used to meet graduation requirements. The calculation uses final percentages from grades 10–12 courses that are applied to satisfy graduation, not every course a student may have completed. Because students choose different courses under the BC curriculum, the courses included in each student’s calculation can vary. The scholarship is distributed as a voucher rather than a direct cash payment.

How recipients are determined

Students do not apply for the BC Achievement scholarship; recipient lists are produced automatically from school reports. Schools report students’ final grades and eligibility status to the Ministry, and an average is calculated from the final percentages of courses used to meet graduation requirements. The calculation is performed once each fall after graduation and there is no subsequent reassessment. In the event of a tie for the last available scholarship, the tie is broken using the final percentage from the course used to meet the Language Arts 12 graduation requirement.

Selection: Eligible students are ranked by an automatically computed average derived from reported course percentages.

Award value and redemption

Each recipient receives a $1,250 scholarship voucher that can be used to reimburse tuition costs. The voucher is redeemable only after the student begins studies at a designated post-secondary institution or a B.C. authorized trades training provider. Vouchers include a printed expiry date and must be redeemed within five years; extensions are not possible. Reimbursement occurs through the Ministry of Education and Child Care once eligible tuition has been paid at an approved institution.

Eligibility

To have grades considered for the scholarship, a student’s school must report by August 31 of the graduating year that the student meets the stated requirements. Core requirements include eligibility for a B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) and fulfillment of the B.C. Graduation Program. Restrictions on course reporting apply: no more than one Transfer Standing (TS) or Standing Granted (SG) may be reported among the course marks used to satisfy graduation requirements. Additionally, the Language Arts 12 course used to fulfill the graduation requirement must have a reported percentage and be at least a “B” (73% or above).

Eligibility: Schools must report that students meet core eligibility and graduation requirements by the specified deadline for their grades to be included in the province-wide calculation.
